SIETE REMIENDOS A LA BANDERA Y UN POEMA
Teresa Soto Tafalla
pues instituir banderas destrozadas
es solo labor del escultor
pues instituir banderas destrozadas
es solo labor del escultor

SEVEN ADJUSTMENTS TO A FLAG AND ONE POEM
(Palette colour) The main colour of a flag is historically determined more by tertiary than secondary colours, depending on the colour spectrum of the population. Furthermore, any attempt made to represent the territory geometrically may be frustrated by the inablity to achieve exact calculations. The flag is, nevertheless, the master of a an ill-fated outline at the mercy of landslides, tectonic movements and water courses. The decisions will dictate primary colours and geometrically geographic territories and at least give the sensation of showing its existence. The force of the decision has the choice of denying its essence and showing its reality.
(Birth Date) The date of birth of some flags is uncertain because they belong elsewhere; the day the handshakes that decided on the agreement now lost in the mists of time. Other flags do have their papers in order. The whims of goverment or the force of struggles considered they were more appropriate for the position but their upbringing took place in a territory that could no longer be represented by them. The bodies of flags suffer so many partitions that the material and colour begin to disintegrate, preventing them from carrying out the only function to which they were assigned and relegating them to an mock existence.
(Integral plastic) A two-part liquid plastic, parts A and B, is poured over a solid plastic in a synthetic spray. For the liquid plastic to adopt the shape the speed of reaction must be accelerated without dissipating it in the process. There are substances that can be used for this process which does not happen naturally. The fixing of one plastic over another builds layers ―transparent on the outside and coloured inside. The layers of plastic harden irremediably into the shape and and can then be modified by breaking it into pieces. When this plastic process becomes rigid the shapes can only be modified by violence.
Plastic on plastic hardens. Layers of plastic harden the flags, layers of meaning harden words.
― synthetic spray / fixed plastic / transparent outside, coloured inside / irremediably / violence ―
(Space constellations) The constellations of stars divide the heavens with their designs in space of ficticious objects, figures, myths and divinities. Abstractions, Europa mounted on a white bull only sees half, has only ever seen half, the limits of her territories have been ordained thus; thus function the hemispheres.
.
Flags are also a real space representing fictitious objects, figures, myths and divinities. The flag bearing a circle of twelve stars arranged as a clock face pays homage to total perfection and symbolizes the unity, harmony and solidarity between peoples. To sympolize does not, however, mean to put into practice.
At this moment the flag is attempting to understand its present situation, wondering which divinity should be called upon and how to deal with the spectres that return every now and then to cast their shadows over it.
(Provisos of Union) The conditions required to create the sculptured pieces in question are fragmentation and assembly. They are broken into pieces to invesigate the particularities of the body to be reonstructed. Firstly it is all deconstructed. then the parts are identified. These are analyzed to understand the process that will remake them. The separated pieces will become powerful.
Then the broken pieces are put together again, mindful of their separation. It is assembled in order to envisage what prediction had brought those fragments together again. The difference of the new assembly becomes its nemesis.
How can variety generate unity?
(By courtesy of Iain Sinclair) What instrument can split or divide a territory? A protractor and a ruler, an angle grinder, scissors or hands, as long as it had already been die-cut. With automatic systems or just by pressing a button. The imperfections must be burnished with great care lest the frayed edges wear away whatever they touch ― badly defined frontiers that will generate indignation and resentment. Splitting or dividing a territory must, above all, be done with tenderness. As Iain Sinclair states: The seed of sentimentalism is part of the territory: it is endemic.1
(By courtesy of Jorge Oteiza) Laying out the contents of a metaphysical box and scattering them reveals the colour of the energy put into it. This open box, superficial and flat, reveals a mystery that still has not been divulged. Why, is even the monochrome creating shadows and sparks? Why is an object,. a formal superficial object represented by straight lines and reasoning, full of nuances and sentimentality. Depth cannot be recognised in the object but can be seen in the gazes. Oteiza says: I cannot discern the tree in what the carpinter is showing me.2
a flying field of quivering spectres
a angry land flourishes its ghosts
a polluted identity brandishes its illusions
a patched flag stirs the gazes
and if this is the only offering
power must be competing with other benefits
for repairing shattered flags
is solely a task for the sculptor
